Day 4: Filters, Stoves, and Turkeys

We started the morning by going to AVIS and getting a rundown of how to put together the stoves and water filters. We then drove an hour in the back of trucks into the Mayan village. We split into three groups and hiked into various locations. Each group installed 4-5 stoves and filters – the boys drilled holes and sealed with silicon while the girls washed the stovetops and played with the kids. At the end of our work, we asked if the families went to church and their relationship with the faith.

My favorite house had a mom and her daughter and granddaughters; they had 20 baby chicks running around! Kayla’s favorite thing was getting to play with a little girl and her tractor toy while cleaning the new stove. David’s favorite part was that his translator Wilbert kept calling the boys in their group “sweetie” in an American accent while they worked on installing the filters. It was a busy day of getting to love on the local community through installing needed appliances and interacting with families!
