Hi! I’m Derek, the new Executive Pastor at Hebron. I’d like to share with you a little of my history so that you understand my passion for ministry.
I was a kid, like any other kid. But my family believed in the importance of teaching me about Jesus. At the age of 13, I realized I was a sinner in need of a Savior, and I trusted in Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of my life. He changed my life forever, and I am still following Him to this day.
I had a dream of playing college football, but that dream was shattered by (what should have been a simple) knee surgery. Somewhere during the knee surgery I contracted a staph infection, which almost killed me. I spent three weeks in the hospital, including three more surgeries to remove the infection, and after losing 30 pounds, I was eventually sent home to finish my recovery. My football career was over, but God used that time in my life to begin calling me to a lifetime of serving Him in full-time ministry.
After graduating from Dacula High School in 1989, I attended Shorter College (now Shorter University). There I met my wife, Kim. We both graduated from Shorter and were married in 1994. She is an amazing woman, and we have three amazing kids, Grant, Andy and Emma Grace.
During college, I served as a volunteer and intern at a few churches, including a year on staff at Hollywood Baptist Church (Rome, GA). After college, I served as a youth pastor at Hebron for about 9 years. While serving here, I had the opportunity to attend the North Georgia Extension of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 2001 with a Master of Divinity.
In the fall of 2001, our family followed the Lord’s call to serve Him in Lake Placid, NY. For over nine years I served as the pastor of Lake Placid Baptist Church, the director of North Country Ministries, and the Resort Evangelism Strategist for the Baptist Convention of New York. One of our areas of focus was to share the good news of Jesus Christ with Olympic Winter Sports athletes. During that time, I started and led a weekly Bible study at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. I even had the privilege of serving as a chaplain at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
The Lord has brought us full circle, back to Hebron once again. We look forward to serving the Lord alongside Pastor Kevin Miller to help lead the church family, pastors, and ministry team to connect people to Jesus Christ, His lifestyle, and His mission for the world.
